Reminisce

I got myself a little upset last night, listening to this piece from The Colbert Report. It wasn’t the latest inequities of the current administration that did it, nor the reminder of times in the US. No, it was the sweet, sweet pings of a TiVo in action. *sniff*

Smoking

There is a section of the religious community that believes that contraception using the pill is abortion, because it hasn’t yet been proven that it is impossible for the pill to block implantation of a fertilized egg. These people want the pill to be banned, therefore, along with all other abortion techniques. Now it looks like they’ll have to add smoking to their banned list of abortifacients. I’m happy to see smoking banned (except when I’m in a libertarian frame of mind), but I suspect this would be something of a hard sell.

Territories

I had no idea that there is a place in North America that is French. Euros, overly-voweled language, garlic-encrusted baguettes (probably), the works. The islands of St Pierre and Miquelon were settled by the French back before people of the requisite paleness had laid claim to everything, and perhaps because it’s at the arse-end of nowhere (a very picturesque nowhere, it has to be said) it was never disputed by people who like their cheese like they like their democracy – petro-chemical based.
