Leisure

I’m sat in front of a flickering fire, watching (or at least listening to) The Big Lebowski, and running test cases. Does it get any better than this? Apart from the test cases bit, obviously.

Workout

Between a busy workload and kid duty I found myself with a spare hour before dinner today. I wanted to exercise, having been out of action for 3 weeks with a cold and a crook foot, but looking at the DIY stuff clogging up the hallway I realized I needed to get into the loft and put some insulation down. Turns out insulating is quite the aerobic workout, at least when you have to cantilever yourself out over the area you’re trying to cover, with your belly resting on a joist, forcing a two foot high roll of fibreglass to unroll in a space one foot high.

On balance, though, I think I’ll stick with rowing for my daily workout.

Bats

Listening to a podcast about a bat that has a longer tongue relative to its body size than any other mammal (and only the chameleon beats it in the rest of the animal kingdom). At 8.2 inches, it’s the equivalent of a cat being able to drink milk from a bowl 2 feet away. I feel some sort of joke about ‘popular with the ladies’ is in order.

Smeghead

I just watched an unaired pilot for a US version of the British series Red Dwarf. Perhaps not surprisingly it’s awful. The actors lack charisma along with any sense of comic timing, to the extent that Jane Leeves (from Frasier) seems great. The laugh track is hideous, the direction is lazy, and every change to the original script seems to be for the worse.

Naturally I watched all of it, and all through I couldn’t help wondering about Robert Llewelyn, who played the character of Kryten in the British version as well as the pilot. In the original he’s very good, and seems to be equally able in this, but surely he must have known just how bad everything around him was. How socially awkward would that be?

Death Metal

I’m a last.fm user, and inspired by a friend signing up I just checked my profile. At the moment the children’s compilation CD ‘Baby Genius’ is at number two for the week, thanks to my kids. On investigating I find that I could tag this artist. Interesting, thinks I, and presses the appropriate button. Here’s a screenshot of what came up:

Baby Genius Tagging

I couldn’t fault their reasoning, so of course I added it.
