There’s a picture of Paris Hilton that’s become pretty common in the last few days, showing her in tears inside her car. It’s actually a pretty good shot, capturing the mood artistically I think, but the subject is not worth it. Go here to see that image, plus another from the same photographer. A pretty depressing look at where we are.

Christopher Hitchens wrote a pretty decent and uncharacteristically sympathetic piece in Slate here – worth reading too.
That’s a good write-up on the stupidity of the situation. The woman has no apparent purpose, but neither does she need one; we need only recognize those twin facts to realize any coverage of her lessens us more than it lessens her.
I’m reminded of this earlier post on another young woman who, if she didn’t deserve better, at least deserved less.
