I’ve been having problems with my front derailleur over the last few days, and last night I spent 10 minutes by the side of the road making adjustments. Unfortunately I’ve never quite got round to buying a multi-tool, so instead I was using the back cover of a Motorola Razr (surprisingly effective). Once I got home I overhauled the system (so expect bits to start dropping off within 2 days), and a tool will be ordered today.

On my cross continental motorcycle trip I had to do several maintenance tasks that required me to use a torque wrench (!!!) and I still managed to buckle a gasket. The future dictates a simpler machine that can be serviced in the field with a tool set that fits in a shaving kit (a multi-tool won’t quite cut it, though). Wire spokes, tubed tires, simple engines. More like what Michaux and Daimler originally created in the 19th century. Some technology is timeless.
