This is a terrific video showing the rise and fall of the Western European empires. Among other things it’s a great reminder of just how recent some of these territories were surrendered (a process that isn’t complete to this day). Well worth a few minutes of your time.

Help me out..I’m a bit slow these days. Is this showing acreage? population? percentage of countries in the world? Interesting regardless.
Acreage – you’ll notice how big the red is (traditionally it was actually pink, I think, which is hardly the manliest of colours for an empire on which the sun never set). Not something I take pride in, by the way, it’s just surprising how much influence such a small country had, whether for good or ill.
