Busy

In case you hadn’t noticed, things have been rather quiet here. Work is busy, life too, culminating on Friday of last week when I spent 20 hours in Budapest – left home at 4:30am Friday, arrived back 11:30am Saturday, which on top of alcohol-based work socializing meant way too little sleep. More regular posting to come, promise!

Energy Taxes

Interesting article from Friedman on how well the Danes have done with energy compared to the rest of us. My favourite bit:

We are going to introduce a new tax reform in the direction of even higher taxation on energy and the revenue generated on that will be used to cut taxes on personal income — so we will improve incentives to work and improve incentives to save energy and develop renewable energy.

Yes! Please do this to me! Punish me for leaving the light on, not for working.

American Roots

Great map on Wikipedia showing where people are originally from in the US, by county. Some notes:

  • That’s a lot of Germans
  • Look how few Norwegians in Minnesota. Take that, Garrison!
  • Other = Cuba or Hawaiian
  • Mormons are English. Sorry about that
  • BIG surprise for Puerto Rico
  • The data for Florida is heavily skewed, because most of the ancestors there haven’t died yet

Got Carter

One of the little legends of American politics is the Tale of Carter’s Sweater, being an allegory for things that might be a good idea, but are too trivial for politicians to be seen to be dealing with. Well in the UK we now have the Legend of Brown’s Lunchbox.* The PM has decided to remind us not to throw out too much food, because it’s like throwing away money I guess. Just as with Carter he’s right, and just as with Carter if our leader is worried about the masses letting yoghurt go out of date then either he’s an imbecile or we’re all screwed. Or both, I guess.

*No, not that one.
